SSI Deep Diving Specialty Course

Overview

The Deep Diving specialty takes you from the 18 meter recreational limit down to 40 meters, the maximum depth for recreational diving. You complete three training dives with progressively increasing depth, planning and leading one of them yourself. The course covers what actually changes as you go deeper: air consumption rises sharply, colors disappear, narcosis becomes a real factor, and your no-decompression time shrinks fast. You learn to plan for all of it, monitor your gas properly, and recognize problems early. There is a theory component and a written exam. You need an Open Water Diver certification or equivalent, and the minimum age is 15. Dahab is a strong location for this course because genuine depth is reachable from shore, without a long boat trip. All equipment, learning materials and certification are included. This specialty is a prerequisite for several more advanced SSI programs, so it is a common next step for divers building toward technical training or professional levels.

Description

Most recreational dive sites sit above 18 meters, but many of the more interesting ones do not. Walls, deeper wrecks, and the deeper sections of reef systems all sit outside the limits of an entry-level certification. The Deep Diving specialty extends your range to 40 meters, which is the maximum depth for recreational diving under any agency. Why deep diving needs its own training Depth changes the arithmetic of a dive. At 40 meters you breathe roughly five times as much gas per minute as you would at the surface, so a tank that lasts an hour at 10 meters may last a fraction of that. No-decompression limits shorten dramatically. Colors filter out, so blues and greens dominate and red disappears entirely. Nitrogen narcosis affects judgment and reaction time in ways that vary between divers and between days. None of this is dangerous when planned for. All of it is dangerous when it is a surprise. That is what this course is about. What you will do The course combines theory with three open water training dives at increasing depth. Dive one takes you to between 18 and 30 meters. This is your first dive past the entry-level limit, and the focus is on noticing what changes: your air consumption, your buoyancy, how the light behaves. Dive two goes to between 24 and 30 meters, building on the first and adding skills. Dive three goes to between 30 and 40 meters, the deepest dive of the program. You plan and lead one of these dives yourself, from the dive plan through to the debrief. This is the part that separates the specialty from simply being taken deep by a guide. What you will learn How to calculate and monitor gas consumption at depth. How to plan a deep dive with proper margins and contingency gas. How to recognize narcosis in yourself and in your buddy, and how to respond. How to manage ascents, safety stops and emergency procedures where the margins are tighter. How to use a dive computer's more advanced information rather than just watching the depth number. Why Dahab Real depth is available here from shore entries, which is unusual. Many locations require a boat trip to reach 40 meters. Here, the topography drops away close to the coast, so the training dives are logistically simple and the surface intervals are spent on land rather than on a boat. Requirements You need an SSI Open Water Diver certification or a recognized equivalent from another agency. If you hold a Scuba Diver certification rather than a full Open Water Diver certification, you will need to upgrade before you can be certified in this specialty. The minimum age is 15. This course does not accept junior divers. You should be diving comfortably and reasonably current. If it has been a long time since your last dive, a refresher first is a sensible investment.
