PADI Open Water Diver Course

Overview

The PADI Open Water Diver course is the entry-level scuba certification and the most widely recognised diving qualification in the world. It is designed for beginners with no previous diving experience who want to dive independently with a buddy. The course combines online theory, confined water skill training in calm, shallow conditions, and four training dives in the open sea. You will learn how to assemble and use scuba equipment, control your buoyancy, clear your mask, manage your air supply, and handle common problems safely and calmly. Training is delivered over 3–4 days by PADI professionals. All standard dive equipment, a dive computer, the full PADI eLearning package and your certification are included in the course price. On completion you will be certified as a PADI Open Water Diver, qualified to dive to a maximum depth of 18 metres anywhere in the world with a buddy of similar experience.

Description

Start your diving journey The PADI Open Water Diver certification is the first step for anyone who wants to explore the underwater world. No previous diving experience is required. If you are comfortable in the water and medically fit to dive, you can complete this course and earn a certification that is recognised by dive centres worldwide. What you will learn The course is built around three connected parts. Knowledge development. You begin with the PADI eLearning programme, which you complete online at your own pace before or during your stay. It covers how pressure affects your body, how to plan dives safely, how scuba equipment works, and the principles behind safe ascent rates and no-decompression limits. Your instructor reviews the key points with you in person and answers any questions before you enter the water. Confined water training. You then practise the fundamental scuba skills in shallow, calm conditions where you can stop and repeat anything as often as you need. Skills include assembling and checking your equipment, breathing underwater, clearing water from your mask, recovering a regulator, controlling buoyancy, and sharing air with a buddy in an out-of-air situation. This part of the course builds the comfort and muscle memory you will rely on for the rest of your diving life. Open water training dives. Finally, you complete four training dives in the sea, where you repeat the skills you learned in confined water and put them into practice in a real diving environment. Between skills you will explore the reef and enjoy your first real dives as a scuba diver. How the training works Training is delivered over approximately 3–4 days. The exact schedule depends on how quickly you complete the online theory, your progress in the water, and the centre's daily programme. Sessions are structured to build progressively: nothing is introduced in open water that has not first been practised in confined water. Who this course suits This course suits complete beginners, travellers who want to dive during their holiday and continue elsewhere, and anyone who has previously tried an introductory dive and wants a full certification. You should be able to swim and be comfortable in the water. Participants must be at least 10 years old; divers aged 10–14 are certified as PADI Junior Open Water Divers with reduced depth limits. What you receive On successful completion you earn the PADI Open Water Diver certification, which allows you to dive with a buddy to a maximum depth of 18 metres without supervision, rent equipment, book dives at centres worldwide, and continue into further training such as the Advanced Open Water Diver course. Included in the price Full standard dive equipment, a dive computer, the complete PADI eLearning package, and your certification fee are all included in the course price.

Sessions

Day 1: Knowledge Development and Course Orientation
our first day covers all the theory you need. You work through the PADI eLearning programme, which is included in your course price and can be started before you arrive, then meet your instructor for an in-person knowledge review. You complete the required paperwork and medical questionnaire, go through dive planning, safety procedures and hand signals, and get a full introduction to the equipment you will be using. This is the day to ask questions about anything that was unclear.

Your first time breathing underwater. In shallow, calm water you complete all five confined water dives with your instructor. You learn to assemble, check and wear your equipment, then practise the core skills: regulator recovery, mask clearing and full mask removal, alternate air source use and ascent, cramp removal, tired diver tow, controlled emergency swimming ascent, and hovering with good buoyancy control. Every skill is demonstrated first and repeated until you are comfortable. By the end of the day you will be ready to dive in the sea.

Your first two dives in the sea. You repeat a selection of the skills you learned in confined water, then explore the dive site with your instructor while practising buoyancy control and basic navigation in a real environment. Maximum depth for these dives is 12 metres.

You complete the final two training dives, including diving to a maximum of 18 metres and underwater navigation with a compass, followed by a final skills assessment. Your instructor confirms you have met all performance requirements, your logbook is signed, and your PADI Open Water Diver certification is processed.
