PADI ADVANCED OPEN WATER DIVER

Overview

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is the natural next step after Open Water Diver. There is no long classroom programme and no exam. You learn by diving. Over two days you complete five Adventure Dives with your instructor. Two are compulsory: a deep dive and an underwater navigation dive. You then choose three more from the options your centre offers, which may include wreck, night, peak performance buoyancy, enriched air nitrox, drift or underwater naturalist diving. The course builds confidence, sharpens your buoyancy and navigation, and gives you supervised experience in different types of diving so you can find what you enjoy most. On completion you are certified to dive to a maximum depth of 30 meters. Each Adventure Dive you complete also counts as the first dive of the matching PADI Specialty course.

Description

Learn by diving The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is built around five dives rather than a classroom. There is no final exam. You read a short section of theory before each dive, then go and put it into practice with your instructor beside you. It is the fastest way to gain real experience after your first certification. The two core dives Deep Adventure Dive. You dive below 18 meters under instructor supervision and learn how depth changes your air consumption, your buoyancy and your perception. You practice planning a deeper dive properly and monitoring your no-decompression limits. Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive. You learn to find your way underwater using natural references and a compass, estimate distance accurately, and return reliably to your starting point. This is one of the skills that most improves a diver's confidence. Your three elective dives You then choose three further Adventure Dives from the options your centre runs. Common choices include wreck diving, night diving, peak performance buoyancy, enriched air nitrox, drift diving, search and recovery and underwater naturalist. Your instructor will talk through the options available at the local dive sites and help you choose dives that suit your interests and conditions on the day. How the training works The course runs across two diving days, with the two core dives and the three elective dives spread between them. You complete the relevant PADI eLearning knowledge sections independently before or during the course. There is no written exam. What the certification allows Advanced Open Water Divers may dive to a maximum depth of 30 meters. Divers aged 12 to 14 earn the Junior Advanced Open Water Diver certification, with a maximum depth of 21 meters, and automatically become Advanced Open Water Divers at 15. The certification is also the prerequisite for the PADI Rescue Diver course and, later, professional training. Credit toward specialties Each Adventure Dive counts as the first dive of the corresponding PADI Specialty course. If you enjoy the wreck dive, for example, you have already started the Wreck Diver specialty. Who this course suits Certified Open Water Divers who want more experience, divers returning after a break who want structured supervision, and anyone who wants to dive deeper than 18 meters or is planning to continue toward Rescue Diver. You need a PADI Open Water Diver certification or a qualifying entry-level certification from another recognized agency. Day 1: Core Adventure Dives - Deep and Underwater Navigation

You start with the two compulsory Adventure Dives. Before each one your instructor briefs you on the relevant theory, which you also cover in the PADI eLearning included in your course price. On the Deep Adventure Dive you descend below 18 meters and learn how depth affects your air consumption, buoyancy and perception, and how to plan and monitor a deeper dive. On the Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive you practice natural navigation, compass use, distance estimation and reciprocal courses until you can reliably find your way back to your starting point.

Day 2: Elective Adventure Dives

You complete three Adventure Dives chosen from the options the centre runs, which may include wreck, night, peak performance buoyancy, enriched air nitrox, drift, search and recovery or underwater naturalist diving. Your instructor briefs each dive and helps you choose based on your interests and the conditions on the day. At the end of the session your instructor confirms you have met all performance requirements, signs your logbook, and processes your PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification. Each dive also counts as the first dive of the matching PADI Specialty course.
