PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course

Overview

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is the natural next step after your Open Water certification. Over two days and five adventure dives — including the mandatory Deep Dive and Underwater Navigation dive — you will expand your skills, build confidence, and explore new diving specialties. No classroom required; the learning happens underwater.

Description

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is designed to help certified divers develop their skills and gain broader underwater experience in a structured, guided environment. Building directly on the foundation of the Open Water Diver certification, this course takes learning out of the classroom and straight into the ocean. The course consists of five adventure dives completed over two days. Two dives are mandatory for all students: the Deep Dive, which takes divers down to a maximum depth of 30 metres and introduces the effects and management of depth, and the Underwater Navigation dive, which sharpens compass skills and natural navigation techniques essential for every diver. The remaining three dives are chosen from a wide range of PADI specialties, allowing students to tailor the experience to their interests. Popular options include Peak Performance Buoyancy, Night Diving, Drift Diving, Underwater Photography and Fish Identification, among others. Each dive is preceded by a briefing covering the objectives, techniques, and safety considerations for that specific adventure. Students are guided throughout by a PADI-certified instructor, ensuring a safe and rewarding experience at every stage. Upon successful completion of all five adventure dives, students earn their PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification — unlocking deeper dive limits and opening the door to a wide range of further specialties and professional-level training.

Day 1: Day one
The first day begins with a welcome meeting where students sign the required course paperwork. Equipment is then collected and prepared before the instructor conducts a full briefing covering the day's objectives, dive plan, and safety procedures. The first dive of the course is the Peak Performance Buoyancy adventure dive, focusing on refining buoyancy control, trim, and positioning underwater — skills that elevate every aspect of diving. Following a surface interval, students complete the second dive, the Underwater Navigation adventure dive, developing compass skills and natural navigation techniques essential for confident, independent diving.

The second day consists of two to three adventure dives, each preceded by a briefing tailored to the specific objectives and techniques of that adventure. The mandatory Deep Dive takes students to a maximum depth of 30 meters, introducing the physiological effects and management of greater depths. Alongside the Deep Dive, students complete one or two additional adventure dives chosen from a selection of exciting specialties including Drift Diving, Fish Identification, and Night Diving — each offering a unique and rewarding underwater experience.

The third day serves as the course completion day. Any remaining adventure dives or outstanding requirements are completed, ensuring all five dives are logged and all course objectives are fully met. Students who have completed all requirements on Days 1 and 2 will receive their PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification, unlocking deeper dive limits and opening the door to a wide range of further specialties and professional-level training. Additionally, Day 3 can be arranged as an optional fun dive day for those who wish to celebrate their new certification with extra dives purely for enjoyment — available upon request for an additional fee.
