Discover Scuba Diving is the simplest way to find out whether diving is for you. It is not a certification course and there is nothing to study beforehand. You arrive, meet your PADI professional, and by the end of the session you will have breathed underwater and seen the Red Sea from below the surface.

How the experience works

Your instructor begins with a briefing covering basic safety rules, how the scuba equipment works, how to equalise your ears as you descend, and the hand signals divers use to communicate underwater. Nothing is rushed and there is no test.

You then enter shallow, calm water to practise a small number of essential skills: breathing comfortably through the regulator, clearing water from your mask, and recovering the regulator if it comes out of your mouth. These are the same foundation skills every diver learns, taught one at a time until you feel comfortable.

Once you are settled, your instructor takes you on a guided dive to explore the reef. You stay with your instructor throughout. The maximum depth for a Discover Scuba Diving experience is 12 metres, though you only go as deep as you feel comfortable going, and many first-time divers stay considerably shallower. There is no requirement to reach any particular depth.

What you will see

The Red Sea coastline at Jeddah offers warm water year round, generally good visibility, and hard and soft coral reefs supporting a wide range of reef fish. Conditions are stable enough that first-time divers are usually able to relax quickly rather than fighting cold or current.

Who this suits

This experience is designed for people who have never dived before. It suits travellers curious about diving, families with older children, and anyone considering the PADI Open Water Diver course but wanting to try it first. No previous experience is required. You should be in reasonable general health and comfortable in water.

Age and health requirements

The minimum age is 10 years. There is no upper age limit. All participants complete a standard medical questionnaire before diving. If you answer yes to any question on that form, you will need written approval from a physician before you can take part. Certain conditions, including some respiratory, cardiac and ear problems, require medical clearance in advance, so please raise anything relevant when you book rather than on the day.

What happens next

Discover Scuba Diving does not result in a certification card. However, if you go on to enrol in the PADI Open Water Diver course, the skills you complete during this experience may credit toward the first confined water session of that course when conducted by a PADI Instructor. Many divers start exactly this way.

Full scuba equipment is provided. Please bring swimwear, a towel, and sun protection.
